Extra Help and Funding for GP Practices and How to Access it

Posted by

Here at eSupplies, we keep a close eye on the issues that affect GP practices and we’re not afraid to offer our opinion, as you may have noticed. Debate is good for the industry and we enjoy hearing about your views, opinions and complaints as well as reading about your experiences. The experience and feedback we receive goes towards not only additional blog posts, but also to ensuring we are able to source and supply new items every day at competitive prices (as well as indirectly offering advice and support to other practices).

We also report on current health industry news. Over the last few years, much of this has been related to the financial constraints that are making the management of a GP practice so difficult, and tips about how to ensure a good or outstanding rating when the CQC visit.

Thanks to our friends at Pulse, we’ve put this blog together to make sure you’re better informed about the current and upcoming financial help that you can apply for. If you want to know what cash the GP practice can apply for, here’s a brief summary:

- Practice Resilience Fund

If your practice is struggling financially, this scheme (worth a total of £40 million over the next four years) is the one for you. There will be more details announced this summer, so speak to your local area team and LMC now to remain informed.

- Retainer Scheme

Currently, a practice is able to receive around £12,000 per year for salaries to incentivise older GPs to take on sessions. That’s going to increase, and you should speak to HEE in your region to access the extra funds.

- Capital Investment Programme

If your practice premises needs improvement, this fund makes £900 million available between now and 2020/2021. The amount of funding you could receive may depend on the secondary care services you provide. To access the fund, you must speak to your CCG before the end of June – so don’t waste any time, do it today!

- NHS Property Service Tenants

If you lease from NHS Property Services, you could get cash toward facilities management services from this scheme. It has also been set up to help with stamp duty land tax and compensate VAT. The money comes from the Capital Investment Programme, though the route to apply is a little different: speak to NHS Property Services. With funding running between now and October 2017, an early application is likely to be best received.

- Releasing Time for Patients

This fund totals £30 million and will be available for practices to support innovation to release capacity and build leadership capabilities. The funding will continue for three years, and further details are due to be released by NHS England shortly.

- Indemnity Scheme

This scheme will help to tackle the rising cost of indemnity insurance, though no specific details have been released yet. Get your view heard when NHS England begins consulting in July.

- Extra funding coming in over the next few years

In addition to the above, there is also a number of other schemes and funding that will be coming on line soon. These include:

- A further £112 million designed to help introduce in-practice pharmacies (speak to your local HEE).

- £45 million to be released for the training of non-clinical staff to help navigation of patients (speak to your local HEE).

- £6 million for practice manager development (speak to your local HEE).

- £15 million for retraining of nurses that want to return to work within the GP practice (speak to your local HEE).

- £171 million for distribution by CCGs to help practices upscale and implement measures tested by the PM’s Challenge Fund.

- £45 million over five years to help finance IT improvements that lead to online appointments, encouragement of self-care, and WiFi in every practice. Application must be made to your CCG.

- £500 million every year through to 2020/2012 to fund increased capacity and the move to a seven-day service.

Avoid a CQC Inspection for up to 5 years

If your practice has been rated good or outstanding, there’s now a big reward. Though it’s not financial, it will affect every single person and patient in your practice: no further CQC inspections for up to five years.

 - Other measures that have been released include:

 - Extra recruitment of GPs from abroad.

 - Abolition of hospital policies that refer back to GPs those patients who have missed hospital appointments.

 - A burnout support service.

For more information, speak to your CCG, stay updated with news from NHS England, and contact your HEE.
